Austria, which has long been anti-nuclear, has called for the continent to abandon nuclear power altogether, but its neighbour, the Czech Republic, is pushing ahead with plans to increase dramatically its production of atomic energy.

The nuclear age ended in Austria before it had begun. Just outside Vienna is the atomic power plant at Zwentendorf on the Danube.

In the late 1970s, it was ready to go into operation. All that was needed was the installation of the fuel rods and the push of a button.

About this short feature:
An Austrian resident has chosen to have his dysfunctional hand cut
off so that it can be replaced with a bionic limb. It's the work of a
Vienna-based surgeon who believes elective amputation and what he calls
"bionic reconstruction" can offer certain patients with traumatic
injuries the best hope of regaining bodily function.

When Neil Bowdler, the BBC Science correspondent, came up with the idea to shoot the “Bionic reconstruction” story, the obvious working tool for me was a VDSLR. Neil was exited and open minded to explore that possibility.

My goal was not to achieve the optimal recognized “film look”. After all, there is no point of having a complete blurred background when Neil is talking about a situation happening behind him….

Also, some of the interviews we made were nicely lit. Unfortunately when editing the short version of the story to “BBC world news” we decided not to use them “content wise”. Those were used later in the longer version done in London for “BBC Newsnight” (

Here is the split screen version of a short video I filmed in "real harsh sun almost midday" conditions.
The idea was to see first hand how the new picture profile is helping the camera to cope with highlights/shadow + how skin tons looks before and After utilizing the LUT.

It was also a chance to check an old Angenieux Leica R Zoom lens (35-70, f2.5/3.3). My feeling is that I need a different adapter to the EOS mount. With the current one focus is not absolute.

Working in Technicolor's CineStyle picture profile is requiring some practice. Focusing is no easy and try to close at list half stop more from the "correct exposure".

Equipment used:
Canon 7d
Fader ND
Cineroid EVF
Tokina 11-16mm f2.8
Canon EF 70-200 f.4
Angenieux Leica R Zoom lens (35-70, f2.5/3.3
